Steps to Make Facebook Private

Click on the little white downwards triangle at right of the top menu. Then click "settings".

Ads Settings

If you want to lock down the Ads settings, so that Facebook won’t track you and tailor the ads to you, then click on "Ads" in the left menu:

Change the following settings:

Click "Your interests" section.

If you’ve been a long time Facebook user, you may be surprised what Facebook thinks it knows about you! By default, Facebook tracks what you like, interact with and visit and it comes up with a selection of your "interests".

You can add them or remove them accorting to your own interest and choice.

Click "Your information" section.

Some of the ads you see are because advertisers are trying to reach people based on information they've provided on their profiles.

Here you will get first Tab of "About you" you'r Profile information like:

Relationship status
Employer
Job title
Education

with the help of this information Facebook show you ads according to your Relationship status, Employer, job title and eduction, you can set it "On" or "OFF" according to your choice.

 Second Tab is "Your Categories".

The categories in this section help advertisers of Facebook reach people who are most likely to be interested in their products, services, and causes. Facebook added these categories based on information you've provided on Facebook and other activity.

You can Add or Close these categories according to your choice.

After "Your Information" Section Click "Ad Settings" Section.

  • "Ads based on data from partners" - change to "Not allowed"
  • "Ads based on your activity on Facebook Company Products that you see elsewhere" - change to "Not allowed".
  • "Ads that include your social actions" - change to "No One"

After "Ads settings" Click on "Timeline and Tagging" in the left menu:

You may want to control that people can post to your timeline and whether you want to be tagged in a post. To be private, You should switch all of those off.

  • To stop people posting to your timeline, click "edit" by "Who can post to your timeline". Change to "Only Me":
  • "Who can see what others post on your Timeline?" - change to "only me"
  • "Allow others to share your posts to their stories? " = change to "Disabled"
  • Hide Comments Containing certain words from your timelin. Click "edit" and add some words that you dont want to see in your comments. 

Tagging:

  • "Who can see posts you've been tagged in on your Timeline?" - change to "only me"
  • "When you're tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience if they aren't already in it?" - change to "only me"


Review:

  • "Review posts your're tagged in before the post appears on your timeline?". Change to "enabled":
  • "Review tags people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook?" - change to "enabled"

After "Timeline and Tagging" Click "Privacy" on the left menu.

Your Activity

If you never intend to post to Facebook, then it is a good idea to lock down your future posts.

"Who can see your future posts?". Click "Edit", then click "public" and then click "More" now select "Only Me".

How People Find and Contact You

You can’t totally stop being sent friend requests, but you can change the setting so that only "friends of friends" can send you a request.

"Who can send you friend requests?" Click "edit" and change to "friends of friends":

Facebook makes it easy for people to find you from your email address. This is why, if you want to be private on Facebook, it is so important you use a separate email address.

  • "Who can see your friends list? Click on "edit" change to "Only Me".
  • "Who can look you up using the email address you provided? Click on "edit" change to "Friends" or "Only Me".
  • "Who can look you up using the phone number you provided?" click "edit" and select "friends" or "Only Me".
  • "Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your Profile?". Click "edit" and then uncheck the box by "Allow search engines outside of Facebook to link to your Profile". Then click "Turn Off" in the warning window.

Profile Settings.

About:

To edit your profile, click your name on the top menu and then click on "about":

The default privacy settings is for everything to be shared with your Facebook "friends" or "Public".

If you want everything hidden, unfortunately you’ll need to go through everything, edit, and change to "only me".

For Example.

Contact and Basic info.

Click on "contact and basic info" in the left menu. For each bit of information click on the edit link on the right. Then click on the privacy icon and change to only me, then click "Save Changes":

Same the example above you can change the following list of details in your profile.

  • Work and education
  • Places you’ve lived
  • Email
  • Mobile phone
  • Date of birth
  • Details about you

Friends:

To edit your Friends Settings, click your name on the top menu and then click on "Friends".

By default, everyone can see who your friends with. To change this, click on "Friends" in your profile, then click on the edit button (There will be a pencil icon on the top right), click on "edit privacy".

  • "who can see your friend list?" Change to "Only me".
  • "who can see the People, Pages and Lists you follow?" Change to "Only Me".
  • "Who can see your followers on your timeline? Change to "Only me".
  • Then click "Done".
